Oh My Stars!!

Today I received word that my kindergarten class' fairy garden was one of the winners in the 2012 Fairy Garden Contest (sponsored by one of my favorite blogs - The Magic Onions).  What a special honor and treat!  I highly recommend going over to The Magic Onions and taking a peek at all those magical fairy gardens!  So inspiring. . .

Free Emergent Readers for the Goldilocks and the 3 Bears!

Woot!  I am so excited!  
I am going to start sharing some of my favorite fairy tale resources.  
It is going to be a stampede of freebies!  

These are print-ables that I have created for my classroom use.  These are for your personal use and may not be resold.

Here are my personal beginning sight word readers. These are very simple for the first of the year. Click on image to download.   These two readers have been created to print two booklets at a time.  Just copy them, cut in half and staple them together!  Easy peasy.

The Shape Robots



This is a great project for practicing the major lines in handwriting.  This robot is constructed using shapes and lines.  This helps develop visual perceptual skills, eye-hand coordination, and fine motor control.  I think it is very important to develop a climate of safety in drawing.  Each child will have their own level of capacity.  I insist on complete appreciation of all levels of execution.  It is very rare that I have a child who will feel frustrated.  I make it clear - no two drawings will look the same because we are not the same.

I use sharpies and crayons for this project.  I lead the children in drawing the robot in a "I draw - you draw" format.  I let the children have total freedom in choosing colors and how to decorate the robot.

 Draw a square.  This is the robot's body.

 Draw a small rectangle on top of the square.  This is his neck.

 Draw a circle or square for his head.

 Draw two slant lines to make the top of his arm.  
It is like a rectangle.

 Draw two more rectangles to finish his arm.
Add small circles for his hands.

 Draw two rectangles for the legs.

 Draw two rectangles for the feet.

 Draw two small rectangles for the eyes.
Draw a curved line for the mouth.

 Make two dots for the eyes in the rectangles.
Draw two square shapes for the ears.

 Add lines around the eyes and on the neck to give him the Robot look.

 Let's have fun and give him triangle hair!

 Ohhh! Let's add curls!

 Let's add slant lines on his body.

 Add a line to each segment of his arms and legs.

 Add details with your crayons.  Try to use just lines
and very little coloring.  Remember we are going to watercolor this!

Mystery Readers!

At Back to School Night - I always have a Mystery Reader Sign-up.  This is one of those ideas that if you aren't doing it - you should start this year!  A Mystery Reader is a surprise visit from a family member (moms, dads, grandparents, siblings, uncles, aunts, etc).  They bring a favorite picture book to read.  One of my traditions is I always let the child sit next to the family member as they read.  It is such a grand moment!   I have had students from previous years come as Mystery Readers!

I like to set up a specific day and time period for Mystery Readers such as Fridays afternoons.  I write in the dates available on my sign-up form. (see below)  It is easier on my planning!  Next, I transfer the information from the sign-up form to my reminder slips.  I clip these on to my lesson plan pages - ready to go when it is time.

I will schedule only one Mystery Reader per Friday.   Here is a download of my Mystery Reader flyer and reminder slips:
